This bank was founded by Ichalkaranji. Ichalkaranji, who was ruled by His Excellency, Late Narayanrao Babasaheb Ghorpade, cherished a dream that small princely states would earn prestige and prosperity by encouraging “trade and industry”. It was because of his generosity and relentless zeal towards this goal that he was able to turn his dream into reality. In this endeavour, he was indeed fortunate to have the full support of a dedicated and disciplined team of men, small and big. Through the relentless efforts and constant encouragement of Late Babasaheb, Ichalkaranji is today enjoying pride as the “Manchester of Maharashtra”, the center of wide spectrum of industry and trade.
The source of inspiration for Ichalkaranji was the late Dattajirao Kadam, who in the fifties established a chain of cooperative institutions in Ichalkaranji with a team of colleagues who shared his mission of the cooperative movement. The unique achievement of Late Kadam Anna was that he gave a broad base to the cooperative movement by expanding it to agro-based industry. One of his landmarks is the foundation of the Ichalkaranji Janata Sahakari Bank Ltd. In this endeavour, he was assisted among others by his young devoted and disciplined disciples Sri. Kalappanna Awade and Late Shankarrao Hupare. Both of them were aware of the shortcomings of their single crusade in competition with the growing needs of the people. With regard to efficient operations, the Reserve Bank of India has no hesitation in granting the Bank to operate as a Bank and has been granted one. Banking license as Urban Co-operative Bank in April 1982. Also the bank has got scheduled status status 29.1.2000. This in itself indicates the achievement of the bank, and reflects the quality of the management and the board. It was natural that, in the beginning, the bank’s operations were on a limited scale, with financial constraints from the public. However, soon, the bank’s kitty began to grow through continuous efforts to collect deposits from the public through innovative and lucrative deposit schemes. Hence the bank can provide financial assistance to a wide range of small and needy entrepreneurs. This strengthened the confidence of the people and more and more co-operatives became the valued customers of the bank. At that time, the traditional handloom industry was making way for the powerloom as the need of the hour. The bank has the distinction of claiming that, it can force small powerloom owners to work in the absence of working capital, to become self-sufficient producers with their own looms. Since the bank is the lifeblood of the economic activities of industry and trade, especially for the weaker sections among them, it was and has been the principal policy of the management to help the industry keeping in view the national development. Owing to the well thought out policy and through its implementation, the Bank can proudly claim its share in promoting and establishing the small powerloom owners and ancillary industry in all respects. Thus we prove the ‘mind weaving bank of mankind’.
